Heavy garden clay holds water and chokes roots in pots. Use a mix with compost plus sand or cocopeat so water moves through and air reaches roots.

Trees and large fruits need deeper pockets of soil than herbs. Raise beds slightly if monsoon water pools in the courtyard.
